Opium Guild.

Sugar.

The 8 firms have all made money owing to the rise of price of

raw opium.

In the 1st. half year the dealers suffered heavy losses, but

since August the cutting off of the European best supply and the demand for Java Sugar in Europe have so far inflated prices

that not only were all losses made good by the end of the

year but a profit obtained in addition.

Metala.

The cessation of the import of metals from Belgium and

Ingland after the outbreak of the war caused a 50% rise in prices and all dealers have made big profits in consequence.

10. San Francisco Guild. (Kam Shan Hong).

80 shops. America being a neutral country, the business of the

guild was hardly affected by the War. The whole guild made a

profit over £1,000,000, owing: -

(a) to the favourable rate in exchange between notes

and sub-coins at this end; and

(b) the low rate of gold exchange in America.

In general, although business cannot be said to have improved

it is going on more steadily. A few more failures may be expected after

China New Year, but money in Chinese hande is plentiful and with good

security can be obtained at 7% – practically the normal rate of

interest.
